The St. Alban's Community
St. Alban's Chapel is a vibrant and active faith community centered on Jesus Christ, welcoming to all, and deeply connected to the LSU community. The church emphasizes a low-church, Protestant Anglican tradition with a focus on God's grace and simplicity in worship. Ministry is seen as the work of the entire congregation, with numerous committees and opportunities for involvement, highlighted by an annual Ministry Fair with a tailgate theme.
The church has a strong history of successful fundraising, demonstrated by a recent Legacy Campaign that exceeded its goal and funded organ repairs and building projects. Stewardship is viewed as a community-building opportunity, and the congregation is known for its generosity and commitment to the church's mission. There is also a focus on planned giving.
St. Alban's offers a variety of ministries, including children's and teen ministries, adult Bible studies, and small groups. There are also numerous social and support groups, such as a Book Club, Ukulele Orchestra, and Runners' Group. A unique evening service called "reCharge!" provides a space for peace and reflection, particularly for students. The church also hosts several AA meetings each week and offers a weekly "Lunch with C.S. Lewis."
The congregation is known for its willingness to work and volunteer, handling maintenance, organizing events, and serving meals. There is a strong emphasis on hospitality, with Sunday morning coffee hours being a popular social event. The church has also embraced digital ministry, livestreaming services and events.
While the congregation is politically and theologically diverse, there is a strong desire for unity and a commitment to respecting all voices. Leadership is shared among clergy and laity, with decisions made by consensus. The church has undergone significant changes in recent years, including growth in staff and organizational structure, and a shift towards a program-sized ministry. The chaplain plays a key role in appointing leaders and keeping the congregation focused on its mission. St. Alban's is also committed to spreading the Christian faith beyond its immediate community, recognizing its influence on students who will go on to lead in various parts of the world.
