How does your trust in God shape your countenance?

I joined St. Alban’s in 2013 and currently serve on the altar guild.

Put your trust in God;for I will yet give thanks to him,who is the help of my countenance, and my God." Psalm 42:7

Devotional

When we pause to contemplate the word “countenance,” this verse becomes especially moving. Merriam-Webster defines “countenance” as a look or expression, mental composure, calm expression, face, or visage—especially the face as an indication of mood, emotion, or character. For example, Mark Twain wrote, “The portly President, with his gavel of office in his hand, … an expression of energy and decision on his countenance …”

I try to practice seeing the light of Christ in others. It’s not always easy, but it’s a discipline that helps me look beyond cultural and racial divides, allowing me to notice beauty and connect more deeply. Yet, Psalm 42:7 offers something even more profound: it suggests that our trust and gratitude toward God enable us to carry the light of Christ within ourselves.

When our souls are longing and our spirits are heavy, if we continue to trust and give thanks, our countenance—our very face—can still reflect God’s light. This passage reminds me that while we are called to see Christ’s light in others, we can also nurture and hold that light within ourselves. Our reliance on God transforms us, so that even in times of sorrow or uncertainty, our faces can radiate hope, peace, and gratitude.

Reflection:

As you journey through Lent, consider how your trust in God shapes your countenance. In moments of struggle, let gratitude and faith illuminate your face, so that you not only see Christ in others but also reflect Christ’s light to the world.
