Is this struggle as timeless as it appears?

Cynthia Townsend

My family and I have happily been a part of St. Albans for five years, where I currently serve as the liaison for Christian Formation on the advisory board. My previous ministry experience at St. Albans includes leading our nursery & children’s chapel and teaching the Bible.

“Be careful not to do your acts of righteousness before men, to be seen by them…” || “So that they will notice you…”

Devotion

Is this struggle as timeless as it appears? Did the first-century Jews struggle with the desire to look good in front of others? They didn’t even have social media! Did they, too, want to make an impression on people? Look at me now! Look how pious I am!

It feels so good to be praised, appreciated, and admired! Is that why the “like” icon on Instagram is a heart? It feels so good to be noticed! Look at me! Did you see that? Now will you love me? When will we think Jesus will be impressed with us?

May we sit in the truth that we are enough, that our value is not based on what others think of us, see in us, or say about us. May we remember and meditate on the good news that Jesus loves us, and may His love compel us to keep doing good work. For our Father, “Who sees what is done in secret, will reward you…” May we remember that God sees us, notices us, and loves us, and may that be enough!
